THE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF BURLINGTON - was first built on the corner of George Washington Turnpike and Belden Road where the stone formation can still be seen.  In 1836 the church was taken down and moved to its present location.  It is said that the only original exterior part now is the small window in the rear of the steeple.

Since that time several additions have been made such as the Chapel and Sunday school rooms, and of course the horse sheds have been taken down.  The church has been almost completely' renovated and painted in the past year.

5THE MANSE - was bought by the Congregational Church in 1849 and first used by the Rev. James Wright.  It has been used as the ministers residence ever since (except for a short time) until sold several years ago.

BROWN ELTON TAVERN - was long thought of as the tavern where George Washington slept the night as he passed through Burlington.  After extensive research in 1994 Tom Turick proved that this tavern was not built until 1808/9 by Giles Griswold well after George Washington's time.  In his research Mr. Turick also discovered that the Center School once stood much nearer the Tavern.

Elsie Hutchins left an estate gift of about $66,000 to the Burlington Historical Society, which enabled members to incorporate in 1955 and maintain the building as a Historical Society ever since.

THE RED SCHOOL HOUSE - before 1804 was located nearer to the town green. Sometime after that it was moved to its present location.  Research has never found when this school house was originally built.  When the Burlington schools were consolidated in 1948, the town library was moved from the old Town Hall to this red school house.

FIRE DEPARTMENT - was organized in 1947.  Their equipment was first housed in a shed behind the old Town Hall near the cemetery entrance.  After the Consolidated school was built, the Town Hall was no longer needed so it was turned over to the Volunteer Fire Department.  The fire department eventually tore down the Town Hall and constructed the present building.  As the town grew, Route 4 became a dangerous location for fire engines rushing to a fire and also the building was altogether too small, so now our fire department has a fine new building next to the Post Office on George Washington Turnpike.

BURLINGTON POST OFFICE - is a new building next to the fire house.  Burlington has a checkered history with the US mail service.  Once the post office was in Whigville, and then in Turners store next to the Congregational Church, finally in Mrs. Lewis' house, now part of Burlington Commons.  In between were long stretches when mail was delivered by RFD from nearby towns. (Rural Free Delivery)

ST. PATRICK"S CHURCH - so named because most parishioners were Irish at that time.  The first church, a wood structure was partially destroyed by fire on 3-21-1925.

After the fire it was decided to move the rectory to the spot where the church stood, and the new church to be built where the rectory was, for that lot was much larger. The Burlington, Collinsville line goes between the two buildings so now the rectory is in Collinsville, and the church in Burlington.

The present church was built of rock quarried in Glastonbury. This church has been called "one of the most beautiful country churches in America".

THE PETTIBONE HOUSE - now the Farmington Savings Bank has been title searched back to about 1805 however Farmington records from 1774 refer to this two story house as the 'mansion house' of Abraham Pettibone, who was one of the town's first settlers.

J.C. Hart writes in 1871 that Treadwell built the Scranton House (later called the Barton House) which further confuses the issue.

This building has had a long relationship with our community, owned by two former ministers and two of the town clerks.

HOGAN’S CIDER MILL -  the Hogan's began making cider in 1912.  Originally the press was operated manually by two large screws which were turned to compress to ground apples.  In 1930 the Hogan's switched to electricity and hydraulics to make and press the cider.

Hogan's was also a large and well run dairy farm, also producing vegetables and cord wood.

TOWN LIBRARY - was first established according to town records in 1895.  At that time it was voted to appropriate $50.00 yearly for books etc.  It was located upstairs in the old town hall for many years, then in the center school house and finally a free standing library was built.  A few years ago the library was enlarged considerably with many more services available, and also a "Burlington Room" for the accumulation of the town history and the history of the town’s people.
